Lesson 2 of 2
Check the AI’s answer
An AI can sound sure and still be wrong.
Remember lesson 1
- What is a label?
- Who chooses the examples an AI learns from?
- Why did the AI get more wrong with the one sided cards?
How many legs does an insect have?
AIInsects have eight legs.
It sounds very sure. Is it right? How could we find out?
Teacher: Do not correct yet. Take answers.
Insects have six legs.
An AI can sound sure and still be wrong.
It finds patterns. It does not check if something is true. So a person checks.
Four ways to check
- 📖Look in a book
- 🧑🏫Ask a person who knows
- 🔎Find a second source
- ✋Try it or count it yourself
Teacher: Ask: which way would you use for the insect? Name one more way.
Check, then sort
These answers are written to look like AI answers. Some are right. Some are wrong.
✓ Right✗ Wrong? Can’t tell
Part A: check 6 answers. Part B: who does what?
The six answers
| 1 | How many legs does a spider have? A spider has eight legs. |
| 2 | What is the capital of Australia? The capital of Australia is Sydney. |
| 3 | How long does a goldfish remember things? A goldfish forgets everything after 3 seconds. |
| 4 | Which planet is the biggest? Jupiter is the biggest planet. |
| 5 | Will it rain next Saturday? Yes, it will rain next Saturday. |
| 6 | What is the best pet? Dogs are the best pets. |
Teacher: Show the six answers if your groups have no cards.
Check results
| 1 | A spider has eight legs. Spiders have 8 legs. Insects have 6. | Right |
| 2 | The capital of Australia is Sydney. It is Canberra. Sydney is the biggest city. | Wrong |
| 3 | A goldfish forgets everything after 3 seconds. Weeks or months. A common myth. | Wrong |
| 4 | Jupiter is the biggest planet. Jupiter. 1,000+ Earths would fit inside. | Right |
| 5 | Yes, it will rain next Saturday. A forecast gives a chance, not a fact. | Can’t tell |
| 6 | Dogs are the best pets. An opinion. People like different pets. | Can’t tell |
Teacher: Cards 2 and 3 sound the most sure on purpose. If a group says card 5 is “wrong”, ask: “Could anyone know that today?”
Part B: who does what?
- Choose the examples an AI learns from
- Spot patterns in a million photos very quickly
- Decide if a result is fair
- Translate a sentence into another language
- Say sorry and mean it
- Suggest a song you might like
- Look at an X-ray picture for a doctor
- Decide what to do with an answer
Teacher: Sort into: People, AI can help, Both. Both means the AI does a part, a person checks and decides.
Sorted
People
- Choose the examples an AI learns from
- Decide if a result is fair
- Say sorry and mean it
- Decide what to do with an answer
AI can help
- Spot patterns in a million photos very quickly
- Suggest a song you might like
Both
- Translate a sentence into another language
- Look at an X-ray picture for a doctor
Teacher: Translating and X-rays: the AI drafts or marks, a person checks and decides.
Talk in pairs, then share
- When should a person check what an AI says?
- Name one good thing AI can help with, and one thing to be careful about.
Teacher: If a child is worried, say: “AI is a tool that people build and people check. You can always ask a person.”
Exit ticket: pick one
- Draw a “checked” stamp on an answer.
- Tick a face: got it, almost, not yet.
- Write: “Before I trust an answer, I will …”
